—  About the Award
—  2014 Awardee
—  Past Awardees

Since 2003, our Branch has honored a member who has made a sustained, significant contribution to the community through public service.  To be recognized with this award, an individual must:

–Be a current member of AAUW-NC and a current resident of Nevada County

–Have made a significant contribution to the community through volunteer and professional activities that relate to the AAWU Mission

–Exhibit leadership qualities.

Each spring, members are asked to nominate individuals that they believe meet these criteria. A committee headed by the current recipient makes the final selection.

2014 Award

Edi Silverman is a tireless community volunteer, and the AAUW-NC Board wanted to honor her by instituting a perpetual award to recognize outstanding contributions to the community by a Branch member. Edi Silverman herself was given the award first.

At the May 2014 Branch meeting, the award was given to another tireless volunteer, Bernadette Sylvester.  A long-time resident of Nevada County, Bernadette’s positive attitude and unbridled commitment to giving back to our community have touched the county in numerous ways. As with her involvement in AAUW, Bernadette is a doer and often an unsung hero. She is one who sees things that need to be done, and she steps up to take them on in her own thoughtful, gracious way. Her motivation is never for recognition, but to contribute to an organization or event that inevitably makes it better and more successful. And more times than not, she is the first to recognize and acknowledge other’s effort.

Bernadette has held all the various director chairs in both the Hospice of the Foothills and Friends of Hospice. In fact, she has been president of both organizations and continues her involvement with those organizations. She served as a member of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and is currently a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She has also be AAUW-NC’s Vice President for Programs and will be co-vice president in 2014-2015.
